Falling Up, by Shel Silverstein

From Publishers Weekly

All the things that children loved about A Light in the Attic and Where the Sidewalk Ends can be found in abundance in this eclectic volume, Silverstein's first book of poetry in 20 years. By turns cheeky and clever and often darkly subversive, the poems are vintage Silverstein, presented in a black-and-white format that duplicates his earlier books. Like Roald Dahl, Silverstein's cartoons and poems are humorously seditious, often giving voice to a child's desire to be empowered or to retaliate for perceived injustice: one child character wields a "Remote-a-Dad" that will instantly control his father, and another dreams of his teachers becoming his students so that when they talk or laugh in class, he can "pinch 'em 'til they [cry]." The poems focus on the unexpected-a piglet receives a "people-back ride" and Medusa's snake-hair argues about whether to be coifed in cornrows or bangs. Sometimes the art traffics in gross-out, as when William Tell gets an arrow through his forehead or a cartoon character sticks carrots in his sockets because he's heard that carrots are good for his eyes. Although some parents and teachers may cringe at such touches, Silverstein's anti-establishment humor percolates as he lampoons conventions (the stork not only brings babies but "comes and gets the older folks/ When it's their time to go"), or discards decorum (a small gardener zips up his pants after watering the plants "that way"). No matter that the author's rhythms and rhymes can be sloppy, or that his annoying insistence on leavin' off the endin' to his ING's seems artificially folksy, Silverstein's ability to see the world from, as he says, "a different angle" will undoubtedly earn this book a wide audience. From School Library Journal

Grade 3 Up?Fifteen years after A Light in the Attic (1981) and 22 years after Where the Sidewalk Ends (1974, both HarperCollins), Silverstein, whose poetry has achieved cultlike popularity, offers readers another collection. While bodily functions seem to be the source of humor in more poems than in the earlier titles, and while there are fewer wonderful images here, the child appeal is as strong as ever. Once again, Silverstein's pen-and-ink drawings are the perfect accompaniment to the poems, always extending and often explaining the words. The book abounds in energetic wordplay ("I saw an ol' gnome/Take a gknock at a gnat/Who was gnibbling the gnose of his gnu") and childlike silliness ("I only ate one drumstick/At the picnic dance this summer...But everybody's mad at me,/Especially the drummer"). Silverstein writes wonderful nonsense verse, but he has used rhyme and rhythm to greater effect in the past. There is much to love in Falling Up, but it has its ups and downs.?Kathleen Whalin, Greenwich Country Day School, CTCopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This is the third hardcover book I have read (Falling Up: Poems and Drawings by Shel Silverstein) by this author. As I have mentioned previously, this author has an original and unique talent to create unusual poems spiced with his drawings making his books interesting reads. I enjoyed this volume the most out of the three books I have read by Silverstein. Each of the wonderful poems also includes the author’s own original and unique drawings. The combination makes for a fun to read book for both adults and younger readers. Like a lot of Silverstein’s books, there are messages and lessons of life we can all relate to reading his poetic words.I really liked most of the poems in this volume, but some of my favorites in this book include the following: Sun hat, snow ball, unfair, crystal ball, no thank you, safe, my robot, sidewalking, Pinocchio, big eating contest, bad cold, people zoo, hypnotized, mirror, mirror, haunted, a battle in the sky, the mummy, a cat, a kid, and a mom, Lyin Larry, no, the smile makers and when I was your age.If you are a Shel Silverstein fan you will love this book. I found it to be refreshing, amusing and entertaining.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Never trust a politician: A critical review of politics and politicians.

If your child resists reading and you are having a difficult time finding books that pique his or her interest, I implore you to give Shel Silverstein a try. He is one of those rare and gifted children's book authors who truly understands the odd, amazing and ever-so-fleeting world that children inhabit. His writing speaks directly to children with incredible wit, hilarity, wisdom and absurdity. He explores their dreams, hopes, fears and apprehensions through delightful metaphor, and without a drop of condescension (which children absolutely detest, and can usually smell from a mile away). From my own experience, I despaired that my 3rd grade daughter would ever pick up a book and read it cover-to-cover without the looming threat of punishment. But when I introduced her to Shel Silverstein's "A Light in the Attic" she took to it immediately. For the first time ever, I caught her up reading past her bed time and sneaking a book under her coat so she could read it in the car. She read "A Light in the Attic" it over and over. We soon purchased Shel Silverstein's other books, including "Falling Up", and my daughter loved them all. Most importantly, Shel Silverstein helped my daughter realize that reading can be fun and exciting, that it can inspire creativity, and that it can offer a window into other worlds and shared human experiences. Although she remains somewhat selective (in a way that I approve of - I don't expect her to like every book she is given, I certainly don't), my daughter has developed what I am confidant will be a life-long love of reading. And I thank the late Mr. Silverstein for the role he played in that!

My kids immediately fell in love with Shel Silverstein's when I introduced them to his work about 7 years ago... They were 1 and 4 at the time. (The older one got his younger brother interested as the younger one got older.) They are now 8 and 11 years old, and they still get a kick out of reading Silverstein's poems: They laugh out loud when they read his poems, and I get great joy from that. So this is our 10th or so of his books, and the boys love it. Can't go wrong with silly, clean poems that bring laughter to little children. Good for adult hearts, too!

Almost everyone knows about this book and its author so I don't really need to go into detail about that. What I will say is that it is an awesome family bonding tool. I have six kids, ages 1 to 19, and they all enjoy listening to the poems from this book together. I'm a huge fan. Some of my favorite readings are in this book. I definitely enjoy sharing things I remember from my childhood with my kids and this is one of them.

Super cute book for children and adults alike! Shel Silverstein is one of my favorite authors. If you haven’t familiarized yourself with his whimsical prose yet, you definitely should!

Great book to have in your child's collection and in really good clean condition for a used book! You can barely tell it's not brand new.

I bought two copies of this book, one for each 8-year-old grandchild. both are pretty good readers with wry senses of humor. It's always tricky trying to introduce poetry to youngsters, but Shel Silverstein manages to make it fun, approachable, and entertaining. Kids like the line drawings and the poems about everything from flatulence to sharing, from friendship to pets, from siblings to teachers.Five stars.

I love this guy. Honestly one of the many reasons I am glad I had children-to read his poetry and let it remind me of how clever he is. Google "Trapeze" and you'll see what I mean. There are other, potentially more sophisticated, children's poetry books than Shel Silverstein's-but I cant imagine one that kids would like better. My kids beg me to read them to them every night.

Shel Silverstein's poems are fabulous and were a favorite of my son's and my granddaughter's. Bought this as a gift for a family member going into elementary education.

My favorite party question is who was Tecumseh and why is his statute at Annapolis, the Naval Academy and why did Home Depot give his name to a little lawn mower engine? Most claim a vague familiarity with the name but nothing else. Allan Eckert in his wonderful,"narrative history" tells the story of this important Shawnee Indian and his struggle to unify Indian tribes to thesis that the flood of white settlers flooding over the Appilacians into what is now Indiana and Ohio. Tecumseh travelled widely pleading with tribes to unify to no avail. Eckert tells this story in a fascinating way describing Tecumseh's immense abilities and sacrifice. If Inwere King I would decree that every American and those wishing to become American read this and the many other Eckert books which so wonderfully tell the story of early history of this country starting with French and Indian Wars and focusing on the frontier. Meet Simon Kenton a real frontiersman and his experiences. What research and story telling.Tecumseh was a natural leader, with great physical, tactical and diplomatic skills. Read this book and meet him. Why General Sherman took his name as his middle name and why the wide spread respect by his opponents- he was the only Indian leader who forbid the torture of prisoners which was common practice with other Indian leaders.

A prophet, a good person, a noble heart, someone who could empathize, someone who understood that complete tribal cohesion and unity was the only way to maintain any sort of power and dignity in the face of the white hoards who came to steal the land, Oh Tecumseh! There should be statues of Tecumseh in every capital building in all the mid-western cities and a monument to him in D.C. But there isn't and there wont be. And this is sad and makes me angry. This is a great book and I'm glad it was written and I'm glad I read it, and I hope it stays in print for many years to come. If any our so called educators had any courage this would be required reading. But they don't and it won't be. I finished this book a month or so ago and I'm still thinking about it-and that is about the highest compliment I can give any book.

This Allan Eckert's book profiles the life Tecumseh from the Indian point of view. It is a difficult read as we follow the life of Tecumseh who strives to unite his people and lead them in a vain war to regain the lands taken from them by the White people. We who are are the inheritors of those very same lands can perhaps feel more deeply for a noble man who perished in seeking to make his great vision a reality.

I had previously read "The Frontiersmen" by Eckert. The subject being about my general geographic area, it is an especially interesting read for me. If you like early American wilderness history, that one is one you need to get.So naturally, after reading about Simon Kenton, I had to pick up Eckert's book about Tecumseh. I was not suprised to find this book the equal to The Frontiersmen.

I read this book several years ago and fell in love with it. I bought this edition to read on a train trip back to Ohio, into the very lands where much of the stories take place. I like the way it is written like a frontier diary/novel, with accuracy, warmth and depth, giving the reader insight into Native American history up to Tecumseh's death in 1813. Although I've read the book before, and seen the outdoor drama, Tecumseh!, the end always seems to come too soon. It breaks my heart every time. Truly an excellent work!

I have heard much about Tecumseh, but I never knew the details. Fascinating.

This is a very long book, filled with exacting details of the tribulations and successes of the Native Americans. I wanted to read it after seeing the outdoor play in Ohio. Tecumseh was a born leader, brilliant in warfare, and the ability to see the future. It takes a while to read and digest the material. The hardest part was trying to remember the individual names for tribes and people.

Actually, there was a sorrow in our hearts as we read this book aloud to our teenagers since we already knew that it had a sad ending for the Shawnee people. Through an amazing array of primary sources, Eckert tells of life among the Shawnee people and their betrayal by the "heroic" Indian fighters of the day, William Henry Harrison among them, and the "great liar" George Washington. No doubt about it--brutality was committed by both sides, and it is depicted in graphic terms in this book. (That's what held our kids' attention!) This book is well-written; it compels the reader to stay up most of the night reading. Don't skip the endnotes--some of the best material is buried there. Be aware that this condensed paperback edition is not the easiest to read in terms of typeface and spacing. Wish Amazon offered the previous edition, which was much easier to read.
